Body-Worn Cameras for Law Enforcement Officers
Bill: HB-300

Threat level: Bright light - Good for right to know

Sponsor: Rep. Daniel McCay

Link to the bill

This bill addresses the use of body-worn cameras by police officers. The bill makes it clear that governments must consider the public interest in weighing whether to make videos from the cameras private. The bill also has privacy protections, including a presumption that those portions of videos from inside homes showing minors or nudity are private records. This bill properly balances the public’s need for oversight of law enforcement with individuals’ privacy rights, and it earns a Bright Light from GRAMA Watch.
